About Barnstaple Town FC.
The Journey
Barnstaple Town Football Club has been at the heart of North Devon football for more than a century, having been established in 1904 as Pilton Yeo Vale.
The club was a founder member of the North Devon League, playing its first competitive fixture on 1 October 1904 at Pilton Park against Ilfracombe.
At the end of that inaugural season the club adopted the name Barnstaple Town – a title that has proudly represented the town ever since – with membership over the years of the North Devon League, Devon & Exeter League, South Western League, Western League and Southern League, while continually striving to compete at the highest level possible.
Barnstaple is the oldest borough in the UK, founded at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw near its estuary into the Bristol Channel. It was a wealthy place in the Middle Ages, gaining its name from being licensed to export “wool staple”. Both the football and adjacent rugby club carry the proud nickname Barum, a shortened form of the name of town in Roman times.
The Golden Years
After joining the Western League in 1948, there followed one of the most successful periods in the club’s history under manager Arthur Coles, marked by securing the Western League First Division title in 1952/52 in dramatic fashion, edging Street on goal average by the narrowest of margins on the very last day of the season. That same campaign also saw victory over the mighty Plymouth Argyle in the Devon Professional Cup Final at their Home Park HQ – a landmark achievement in the club’s history.
A second Western League title followed in 1979/80, as Barum claimed the championship by a single point. Remarkably, this success received little publicity due to a national printers’ strike at the time.
Further honours arrived in 1993/94 when Town won the Western League First Division title in emphatic style, scoring a record number of goals and points to regain Premier Division status.
A New Era of Ambition
The period from 2013 onwards brought renewed energy and a strong emphasis on local identity. Joint managers Barry Yeo and Karl Baggaley built a side heavily featuring locally born players, winning promotion back to the Western League Premier Division in a historic 2014/15 season with a remarkable 100 points, 128 goals and a +101-goal difference, alongside a Les Phillips Cup Final appearance.
In their first season back in the Premier Division in 2015/16, Barum finished as runners-up and achieved promotion to the Southern League Division One South & West — at Step 4 the highest level and a significant milestone in the club’s history.
Competing at that level presented fresh challenges both on and off the pitch and, following six seasons in the Southern League, the club returned to the Western League Premier Division at the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.
Recent Seasons
In the three completed seasons since then, Barnstaple Town has firmly re-established itself as one of the leading sides in the Western League Premier Division, finishing each time in the play-offs in 3rd, 5th and 4th place, while also reaching the Final of both the Les Phillips Cup and the Devon Senior Cup (St Luke’s Bowl).
In the 2025/26 season, the club was crowned Champions of the Jewson Western League Premier Division. Manager Ben Potter also led his side to victory in the Les Phillips (Western League) Cup, the Torridge Cup as well as promotion back to the Southern League. His squad also enjoyed notable success on the national stage by reaching the Fourth Round (last 16) of the FA Vase for the first time in over 30 years.
The Present and the Future
The club remains firmly committed to developing local talent, strengthening its community foundations and building sustainably both on and off the pitch. From Pilton Park in 1904 to Mill Road today, Barnstaple Town Football Club continues to represent the town with pride, resilience and forward-thinking ambition.
