Become a Referee with Middlesex FA!
The FA Referee Course gives new referees the essential skills, confidence and knowledge needed to safely and effectively officiate grassroots football. Whether you aspire to referee Mini Soccer, 9v9 or 11v11 football, this course is the perfect starting point for anyone aged 14 and over.

The course includes a blend of online learning and face-to-face training. Your online Laws of the Game learning must be completed before attending the in-person sessions, alongside the required Safeguarding Children training.

What’s Included?
Face-to-Face Training (11 Hours)

Delivered across one evening and one full day, this engaging and practical experience combines classroom learning with on-pitch activities. We reinforce the key messages from your online learning while helping you turn knowledge into real refereeing skill.

Classroom activities include:

Fun, interactive quizzes

Building rapport with players and coaches

Recognising foul challenges and handball

Understanding and managing offside

Dealing with inappropriate behaviour

Effective player management

On-pitch practical sessions cover:

Communicating decisions with confidence

Cautioning and sending-off techniques

Managing kick-offs, free kicks, penalties, corners and throw-ins

Positioning during open play and restarts

Assistant referee roles and responsibilities

Qualifying as a Referee

To gain your qualification, you must complete five match appointments after attending the face-to-face training. Middlesex FA will fully support you through these fixtures, providing guidance as you begin your refereeing journey.

Once qualified, you’ll have access to ongoing development opportunities, both online and in person.

Accessibility & Support

If you have a condition or additional requirement that may affect your participation in either the practical or theory elements, please inform us as soon as possible. We will make every reasonable adjustment to support your learning and ensure you have the best chance of success.
